1666: Amsterdam FAQ
All Questions
What is 1666: Amsterdam?
A dark, story-led third-person action-adventure from Panache Digital Games, the studio founded by Assassin's Creed creator Patrice Desilets. You play Noa, the Collector, investigating 17th-century Amsterdam by day and hunting demons hiding behind human faces by night. It entered Steam Early Access on August 25, 2026.
Is 1666: Amsterdam free?
No, the Early Access game is paid. However, a free Prologue is available as a separate entry on both Steam and the Epic Games Store, and it stays free. The Prologue is the only way to try the game without paying.
Can I play 1666: Amsterdam on PS5 or Xbox?
Not yet. Panache has confirmed console versions are planned, but no release date has been announced for PS5 or Xbox Series X|S. At Early Access launch the game is PC only, via Steam and the Epic Games Store.
Is 1666: Amsterdam on Nintendo Switch 2?
No, and it has never been announced for Switch or Switch 2. Any release date you see quoted for a Switch version is invented — the studio has never listed the platform.
Do I need a ray tracing GPU to play it?
Yes. The Steam listing states hardware ray tracing is required, with an 8GB RT-capable card as the minimum. There is no software fallback, so cards without ray tracing support cannot run the game at all.
Is 1666: Amsterdam an Assassin's Creed game?
No. It is an entirely separate project from a separate studio. The confusion comes from its history: Patrice Desilets created Assassin's Creed, announced 1666: Amsterdam at Ubisoft in 2012, lost the project when it was cancelled in 2013, and recovered the rights in 2016.
Does 1666: Amsterdam use AI-generated art?
Panache confirmed in June 2026 that generative AI was used in some marketing assets and in-game portraits, apologised, and committed to replacing them. As of August 24, 2026, neither Steam listing displays an AI content disclosure section.
How long is the Prologue?
Most players finish it in 25 to 40 minutes. It covers Noa's Commencement as a self-contained chapter rather than the opening hours of the full game.
Does the cat choice in the Prologue matter?
The available evidence suggests it is cosmetic — reported options such as Wilder, Knight, Hermit, Alchemist and Spirit appear to lead to the same companion with the same abilities. Community opinion is not unanimous, and whether it gains weight in the full game is unverified.
Does Prologue progress carry into Early Access?
Unconfirmed. The Prologue is a separate Steam app rather than a demo of the paid game, and Panache has not stated that saves transfer. Treat it as standalone.
